MultiCounter on Symbian PhoneThe first time I used a counter while crocheting was when I made the vest. Since I don’t have a real counter, I borrowed my husband’s Ipod Touch so I can use the StitchMinder to write my row count.

Today, he made a multicounter application for my mobile phone. If you’re mobile using Symbian operating system (S603rd edition) and want to use this application, you can download the application from his website.

The good news is, it’s a freeware. Feel free to use it 🙂

Update: Java/MIDP/J2ME version is also available.
I requested my husband to make this application so it can be used on most hand held and today he finished the MultiCounter application for J2ME version. This version already tested on Nokia 7610, Nokia 9300, Sonny Ericsson P990i. This version support for device with touch screen, you can easily increase or decrease the number by touching the screen. For other handheld you can use the right and left keys.

You can download this version from his website and this version is a freeware too 🙂

Sc berkeliling Sc balik tiap baris

Yuk cobain.

Little blue boy hat

A few days ago, Free pattern of the day from Annie’s Attic was a baby boy set (hat and sweater). I like the texture on the pattern so I decided to make it. I thought the mix of blue-white yarn can show the texture. So I started right away with the hat.

I used a few kind of stitches on this hat: dc, fpdc, bpdc, hdc and reverse sc. It always fun making a product with many kind of stitches in it. I finished the hat today. I’m a little bit disappointed though, I don’t think the texture looks good with this yarn, so I decided not to do the sweater yet. I think the plain color yarn will be better when playing with texture.

Until today, I still can not decide how to finish my vest. I’ll just leave it for a while and come back again after I know what to do with that. While I was doing the fpdc hat, I saw this cable hat from the same designer. I decided right away, this hat will be my next ‘cable’ project. The cable hat has fpdc and bpdc stitch.

Beannie boy hat

I started with the blue-white color yarn, but then the cable motif didn’t show with this kind of yarn. I ripped it off again and make a standard hat for about 2 hours. I only use dc stitch. And 2 rows of fpdc and bpdc for the hat’s edging.

This kind of yarn is my least favorite. I like blue and white colors, but this kind of yarn gave me headache when I have to count the stitches. I didn’t know that fact when I bought the yarn. I still have some balls of this yarn. Any idea what’s the best project to do with this kind of yarn?

Cable hat - half wayAnyway, I chose other plain color from my stash. I use local baby yarn and make it with 2 strands and use 5mm hook. I modified the original pattern. There are 2 patterns in the pattern web site, I make the first one with 12 dc to begin with. I tried to begin with 16dc, but the hat become curly and I don’t like it.

Cable Hat Finished

Wrong Side of Cable HatThis is how the cable hat looks like. Out of curiosity I take the picture of the wrong side of the cable hat. I think this can be 2 side hat. The bpdc become fpdc if we see from the wrong side. So maybe it’s not the wrong side at all 🙂 .

I spent almost 3 days to make this cable hat. I prefer to combine sc and fpdc to make crochet cable motif than fpdc and bpdc stitches. Doing bpdc stitches is not as fun as doing fpdc stitches.

cablecrochet

Coba yuk!.

I always love to crochet with fpdc(front post double crochet) stitch. That’s why I started the vest project for Joe. The vest pattern has hundreds of fpdc stitch, and I enjoyed every fpdc stitch that I made.

cimg4246At first, I started the vest project using some acrylic local yarns. After half way, I changed my mind. I worked in round with this local yarn, somehow the fpdc line is not straight anymore. Maybe my tension is not even, or maybe I didn’t follow the instructions correctly.

I bought some imported merino yarns. I bought 10 balls and later I bought 2 balls more. This time, I separate the front side and back side of vest to keep the line motif straight.

This is a big festival in Chiang Mai. The big celebration was held for 2 days. For almost a week I could not sleep well because the noise of firecrackers here and there are so loud especially after midnight. This year my husband and I decided to look a little bit closer to this festival. We took some pictures on the first big day celebration around our place and on the Nawarat Bridge. Some info to explain the pictures are taken from Wikipedia.

The Thai tradition of Loy Krathong started off in Sukhothai, but is now celebrated throughout Thailand, with the festivities in Chiang Mai and Ayutthaya being particularly well known.

Full MoonLoy Krathong is held on the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. In the western calendar this usually falls in November.

Krathong Boat with fireworks

"Krathong" is a raft made from a section of banana tree trunk (although modern-day versions use specially made bread ‘flowers’ and may use styrofoam), decorated with elaborately-folded banana leaves, flowers, candles, incense sticks and nowadays they add firecrackers also.

Decoration near the Ping River People ready to float the Krathong

"Loy" means to float. During the night of the full moon, many people will release "krathong" on the river or on the pond. The act of floating away the candle raft is symbolic of letting go of all one’s grudges, anger and defilements, so that one can start life afresh on a better foot. People will also cut their fingernails and hair and add them to the raft as a symbol of letting go of the bad parts of oneself. Many Thai believe that floating a krathong will create good luck, and they do it to honor and thank the Goddess of Water, Phra Mae Khongkha.

In Chiang Mai Loy Krathong is also known as "Yi Peng". A multitude of Lanna-style hot-air lanterns (khom fai) are also launched into the air where they resemble large flocks of giant fluorescent jellyfish gracefully floating by through the skies. These are believed to help rid the locals of troubles and are also taken to decorate houses and streets. And recently they also play the fireworks and firecrackers and make it looks like new year celebration.

The day after the big celebration, many remaining of the "krathongs" are still  floating on the river. If the krathongs were made from the banana tree trunk then it is okay, but if they were made from styrofoam,  it means more pollutants goes to the water. The firecrackers also produces smoke that pollutes the air. On the celebration day, many people get drunk. Every year many accidents happens during the week of celebration: fire from the kom fai or car/motorbike accidents because of drunk people.

I  hope in the future people will celebrate this days without losing the meaning. More photos you can take a look on our flickr.
